We have to admit that it’s tough to compete with that Fruit Ninja playing cat, but we’ve just uploaded our modest contribution to YouTube’s video offerings. Witness how we dramatically flip through a freshly printed Game Machines 1972-2012 book. Well, at least parts of it, to keep the video at a reasonable length. The C64-style soundtrack is provided by renowned computer game musician Chris Huelsbeck (www.huelsbeck.com).

The proof is in the colors
The good news: We are color-proofed and ready to roll the printing press for Game Machines 1972-2012. The not quite so good news: this should have happened a little earlier and our original release date slipped from an optimistic Dec 6th to a more realistic Dec 22th. Basically it’s a case of Santa Claus >>> St Nicholas (aren’t they related anyway?).
We think it’ll be worth the wait as we spent some extra time on optimizing color tones and “remastering” photos. Get your new year’s resolutions out of the way early by pre-ordering Game Machines 1972-2012 now.
Here are a few PDF samples from Game Machines 1972-2012 to give you a better idea of the book design and structure:
Atari 800 chapter start (a true classic).
Nintendo DS chapter start (one of the extended articles. The DS only had 1 page in the 2005 edition and covers 3 pages in the 2012 volume).
Hardware index (… that’s a lot of machines mentioned in the book).
Table of contents (these system get the VIP treatment with separate chapters and photographs).
Enjoy!
The files are submitted, the printer is warming up and we have a press release about Game Machines‘ launch on December 5th. If you pre-order now, we might even ship your copy a little earlier ;)
Vancouver, BC, Nov. 9, 2011 – Enati Media and GAMEplan today announced the publication date of Game Machines 1972-2012 – The encyclopedia of consoles, handhelds and home computers. The 2nd English-language edition of the renowned gaming history reference book will be available in North America on 12/05/2011 and can be pre-ordered at www.gameplanbooks.com. Printed in color throughout and featuring over 700 photographs, Game Machines 1972-2012 is the reference book for every gamer and anyone interested in the history of computer entertainment.
The first 2005 edition of Game Machines became an instant classic and has been sold out for years. For the new release, author Winnie Forster teamed up with publisher Enati Media to revise and edit the translation based on the German Spielkonsolen und Heimcomputer books. Game Machines 1972-2012 grew to 248 pages to accommodate more recent systems, now covering four decades of electronic game systems, from the Magnavox Odyssey and Atari 2600 to the Apple iPhone and Sony Vita.
Recognized as a ‘very entertaining’ (IDG) ‘thrilling journey’ (Official PlayStation Magazine), Game Machines presents background information and key technical facts about game computers and consoles, along with classic software in its authentic, pixelated glory. Among the almost 500 systems covered are million-sellers and exotic variants, dream machines and bizarre oddities.

Hey, we’re getting there! All the article extensions, intense editing and partial re-translations took a little longer than expected, but we’re nearing the final stretch of our production. We’re basically sitting on a press release begging to be set loose, but it has to wait until a firm publishing date is set. The current not-so-firm status is “before the end of the year”, so hold on to that Christmas shopping money.
What we do know for sure is that the new Game Machines book will grow to 248 full-color pages, including a new chapter on the “HD era”. We should have an update shortly with a print date and more pictures. In the meantime, why not ‘like’ us on Facebook?
You are standing in an open field west of a white house, with a boarded front door. Or maybe you’re not.
You actually have discovered the construction site of GAMEplan’s English-language blog. We are currently preparing a new, expanded and revised edition of our book “Encyclopedia of Game Machines” which has been out of print for some time.
“Game Machines” is a critically acclaimed retro gaming reference book about more than 400 video gaming systems since the 1970s. It presents almost every game computer and console ever created (along with classic software). High quality paper, full color chapters and extensive appendixes have made the first edition a rare collector’s item.
In the next months we will be releasing more information about the new and improved 2011 edition. While you are here, why not add out RSS feed to your news reader so that you will be aware of any updates we are posting? Thanks!
